CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Sinbad
Character Canon: Magi: Adventures of Sinbad

History: http://magi.wikia.com/wiki/Sinbad#History

AU History: Sinbad was originally from a distant city-state within the Archipelago that had fallen onto hard times due to constant warring, and his father was among the countless casualties. Two years prior to the present, he was forcibly press-ganged into an excavation to uncover pre-Cataclysm weapons by the ruling class – in a set of ruins known as a ‘Laboratory’. He was one of only two survivors of the expedition, owing his life to a newly hatched Dratini he found in the ruins. Whatever he found there, he refused to hand it over to the General in charge of the expedition and fled the region.

He wandered all over the known world with his Dratini – seeing inequality and suffering, and vowed to change the world to something better. Sinbad soon realized he’ll need capital, and people behind him and thought hard on how he will gain both. After a series of excavations into ruins (which he planned on writing some books about his adventures), he used the loot to open up a mercantile company – deciding that the first order of business was to open up communications between different civilizations, which in his eyes would allow people to exchange ideas and learn things they otherwise would never know about.

During this time, he met a Fanalis girl named Morgiana, and despite the staggering bad first impression he made, they became travelling companions, and had learned about Union from her – and while he was already intrigued by what she said, the recent incidents made her want to return, she asked him if he would like to come with her to help, and he readily agreed.

Canon Personality: Sinbad seems to be the epitome of the wide-eyed adventurer – excitable and curious, he can’t very well leave well enough alone. Growing up as a poor son of a fisherman, and a sick mother to look after, he never had much of a chance to explore the world until his fateful encounter with Yunan. As he would state repeatedly – he views that he has to see everything there is in the world, no matter the risk. And he’ll do it with a smile – if not while neck-deep in danger, but immediately afterwards, laughing over the dangers he faced as he seems to enjoy the adrenaline rush and the risk of the unknown. However, he doesn’t feel others should be subjected to the same risks he takes; constantly warning others against going into Dungeons as he feels it’s far too dangerous for most people.

He’s also a wannabe Casanova, constantly hitting on girls he find attractive. Generally though, Sinbad will stop flirting with people that show no interest in him, as he doesn’t want to be too pushy. While he might develop a crush on someone, he isn’t very serious and just seems to do it because he likes the attention – both giving and receiving. On the other hand, he likes to tease guys with light-hearted ribbing and good natured mocking, but he almost never intends to be mean when he does it.

The major thing is Sinbad does what his heart tells him to do, regardless of the danger. He abandoned his homeland of Parthenvia because he was disgusted with their ways, even though it meant he has to look out for Assassins for possibly the rest of his life, and almost destroying his chance at making an alliance with another kingdom because he felt it was wrong for its ruler to use his power for an unfair advantage just to ‘prove a point’. Long as he got an idea of what he wants to do, he will do it without hesitation and without a single thought of giving up or surrendering.

His sense of empathy is extremely strong, he sympathizes even with those who tried to kill him – saving Ja’far when the young boy was falling despite the latter’s crude behavior and previous attempts to assassinate him, and in Magi, he even approached a known enemy who acted like he was crying for help despite the obvious danger. Sinbad enjoys being around people in general, the first to a party, first to lend a hand if someone needs one, and quick to offer friendship to others, and when he learned to write – he found he really loved creating stories, knowing that he’s reaching out to people he would otherwise never meet.

Sinbad only seem to hold hatred for people who would manipulate and use others as tools, and those that would cause suffering just because they can. If they showed no signs of being manipulated themselves or regret for their actions, he will never forgive them and will do anything to stop them.

The best way to describe his intelligence level is ‘Clever, but foolish’. Sinbad often comes up with brilliant ways of using his environment to his advantage, such as using a fallen shield to ride a geyser to get to a high place, but there’s times when he clearly doesn’t think things through or don’t consider consequences, such as when he tried to open a stall in Reim without checking to see if they needed a license first and ended up getting horribly ripped off, then there’s the time Ja’far had to literally ground him to keep him from flying into a new city in his Djinn equipped form because he never thought about how someone might mistake him for a monster in that shape all because he didn’t want to climb mountains. Generally the less he wants to do something or the more bored he is, the more harebrained his schemes to avoid doing the thing becomes, while if he just sits down and thought ahead, he’s actually quite capable of brilliant tactics such as laying out traps for a giant sea monster to help Hina kill it, and it might've worked if a storm hadn't come in.

AU Deviation: As Sinbad never gotten any ‘you are a destined ruler’ speech, he is significantly less arrogant then his canon version. While he’s confident in his skills, outside of a fight, he never assumes anything is a sure bet and is far more cautious in how he enacts his plans. This also involves business deals and adventure, as he doesn’t quite rush headlong into danger.

With the more cautious approach, he will be more of a schmoozer when it comes to those who are in a strong position.

Canon Abilities: In Adventures of Sinbad, he doesn’t have near the variety of powers that his Magi version has but here’s what’s known up to the current chapter (48):

Sinbad has the uncanny ability to sense the right direction to go whenever he or his loved ones are in danger. For example, he was born during a volcano eruption and as a newborn baby, he was pointing out to his parents the direction they should run to safety, and as a five year old, he was able to determine where home was when he and his father got lost at sea.

And to a lesser extent – it’s never explicitly stated, but more inferred – that he could sense people’s life energy in a manner that allows him to get an almost Spider-sense forewarning of an attack, allowing him to predict and counter their moves. It’s hinted this is how he predicted the timing of geysers in Baal’s dungeon to avoid getting blasted, and how he caught Valefor’s decoy when it got away from everyone else.

Baal: His only Djinn equip, he is able to turn into a half-dragon like form that is able to execute lightning-based magic and fly freely. And the latest chapter confirms that people in Djinn Equip are far more durable then they would be as humans.

Valefor: This djinn grants Sinbad the ability to envelope the area around him in freezing, sub-zero fog and ice that will only affect his enemies, and leave himself and his allies untouched. He also is shown to use it create snowflakes as part of a show.

Enlightened Abilities: Sinbad is a Kindred Soul with Psychic/Dragon typing.

Starting off, he has psychic abilities that he subconsciously uses during stressful situations or when his adrenaline is pumping. This takes the form of either aura reading or very short-term precognition that allows him to sense danger coming his way. Sinbad calls these flashes of warning ‘waves’, and does not realize he actually has psychic powers.

On his first evolution, regardless of whether he’s clued into the nature of the waves or not, he will gain the power of empathy and be able to sense the emotional state of humans and pokemon. On the more physical front, his dragon typing starts showing up as claws will form on his fingertips that are sharp enough to cut through glass, and some scales will start to cover very vulnerable parts of his body - mainly his sides and neck.

On his final evolution, Sinbad will be able to fly under his own power, but can travel no faster than a human going on a quick jog so it’s more used to avoid going over exhausting terrain or get a viewpoint advantage. The young man will also develop a ‘dragon’s breath’ attack that is actually an electrical charge (think Charge Beam) though using is extremely exhausting.

As a capstone to his psychic development, Sinbad’s aura reading and empathy abilities are enhanced to a degree that he can get a feel for not just their emotional state or whether they’re about to hit him, but their wishes and needs (for example, sensing that a customer needs to feel more confident about themselves, or that a fellow trader wants to cheat him). In practice it’s less like mind reading and more like an uncanny ‘gut feeling’ as he can’t pick out distinct words or thoughts, just the general sense of what someone wants.

UPDATE: Mega-evolution
Due to overcoming the trials, realizing that he has a darker nature he has needs to watch out for to avoid succumbing to, and that he can't shoulder all his burdens on his own - Sinbad has proven himself worthy of a megaevolution.

When he uses it - he changes to an Ice/Psychic type, his hair turns an almost white-pale shade of pink, gain fox ears, and his dragon-tail becomes a fluffy fox tail, while the scales present on his body turns white.

Abilities wise he gains the ability to freeze things, creating a localized hail as per the move, and most insidiously the power to lower the movement of molecules to near absolute zero, causing something or someone to be slowed to a complete crawl. If this affects a person, their brain process is similarly frozen, so they are not aware that they had been effectively stopped and would perceive anyone moving around them as teleporting - Think of it as just having the ability to inflict the Frozen Status.

Starter Pokémon: a Dratini named Badr

Notes/Special Considerations: Sinbad’s going to try to open a merchant house in Union as the base for a trade network with the hopes of connecting with all known civilizations.

Also, he is still holding onto the artifact that his home city-state still wants badly. This item would be an Icy Rock: Which allows anyone to hold it to extend the effects of Hail in a localized area.

SAMPLES
First-Person: What do you seek for humanity’s future? That everyone – human and pokemon - can come together in peace, exchanging ideas and values while maintaining their own individuality. There will always be disagreement on ideas, I know – but what I want is they will respect these differences or hash it out in diplomacy instead of turning to the sword.

What do you feel your role in your city is? Right now, I simply a humble merchant plying my trade. And part time spelunker.

To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness? Absolutely everything, even if it means risking my life! They wouldn’t call me their ally if I wouldn’t go the distance to help them.

What would you say the most important occupation is within your city? *Makes a disgusted noise* In my homeland, it’s a Soldier, to the point where those who are unable to serve are called cowards. I personally feel it’s our farmers and fishermen are the more important ones. No food, no city.

What does the story of the Savior mean to you? The Savior? Who is that? Could you tell me what it’s about?

Third-Person:

What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man? Determination. Can they go and grasp their dreams? Are they willing to try? I can respect someone who will go on no matter the hardship.

What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond? Friendship. I want to be friends with everyone that travels or works with me, not servants.

What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you? My heart. It’s what I listen to, it’s what drives me to do what I do, and it won’t be deterred by anything.

A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend? I’ll help the one that’s in the most trouble by breaking up the fight and try to figure out why it happened in the first place and fix it.

You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies; upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home? I will survive using my determination, my wit, and observation skills. They helped me out before and they will help me out again.

You plunge into the depths of ruins of an ancient civilization. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom? Do I have to pick just one? I want it all! They would all be useful and could make some pretty good stories to tell.

When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why? Bonding with it of course! It will help bridge a gap between the two worlds, and we would gain more from allying with each other than by fighting needlessly.

What do you do to ensure we never again awaken the wrath of the gods upon humanity? By listening to each other and the pokemon we live with. Ignorance and Prejudice was probably what brought the wrath down in the first place.

In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable? Intentionally hurting living things and using them like tools. Everyone should have the right to live as they choose peacefully, and I cannot forgive a person that would take their choice away.

What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills? The Wild Mountains of course! To race across the world like the wild wind, to see new horizons – always something to see, to do what’s never been done before.
